PROJECT PROPOSAL. Urban Winery in Downtown Oakland

Our vision is to transform a parking lot situated across Grand Avenue from Lake Merritt in downtown Oakland, California into a dynamic urban winery. Inspired by the natural beauty of wine country, we aim to recreate the essence of terraced hillsides and wine caves within the heart of the city.

DESIGN CONCEPT. Harnessing the site’s original typography, our design approach generates a gridline system that integrates seamlessly with the existing urban fabric. By pushing and pulling architectural masses, we create terraced planes that mimic the undulating hillsides found in traditional vineyards. These visually striking terraces not only capture the eye but also serve as functional spaces for wine production, events, and storage.

TERRACED HILLSIDE AND MIRRORED VOID. Imagine stepping into the winery and being captivated by a breathtaking sight. Below ground, a mesmerizing mirrored void or cave has been ingeniously carved out. Reflecting and amplifying natural light, this subterranean space pays homage to the traditional wine caves while providing an atmospheric environment for wine storage and private events. The play of light and shadow creates a truly immersive experience for visitors.

PROGRAMMATIC INTEGRATION. Our design adheres to the logic of the terraced hillside, optimizing the winemaking process. Above ground, the terraces house the gravity-driven wine production facilities, ensuring a seamless and efficient workflow. These versatile spaces are also ideal for hosting events, fostering a sense of community and celebration.

Surrounding the underground wine cave, dedicated storage spaces cater to the diverse needs of the winery’s collection. Every bottle finds its place in these purpose-built areas, guaranteeing proper aging and preservation. The below-grade space itself offers flexibility, easily adapting to wine production or event requirements as needed.
